GENEVA — It took three votes — including one that went to a chairman’s tiebreaker — but a non-binding resolution in support of the Second Amendment won Kane County Board approval Tuesday.

The 19-4 vote, with one member voting present, didn’t come without some jousting by board members. It’s back to the drawing board for the Aurora Township Democrats.

A Kane County judge overturned the decision to seat Christina Campos as the nominee for township supervisor, leaving the Democrats without a candidate for the April 7 election.

Judge Michael Colwell ruled Friday the confusion surrounding the original nominations meant Campos should not be seated as the candidate.

Campos’ nomination had been challenged by the two runners-up, attorney Paul Greviskes and current Supervisor Annie Craig, citing violations of state law and local caucus rules…. (read full)

Aurora mayor up for debates

Aurora Mayor Thomas Weisner answered challenger Richard Irvin’s call for debates Wednesday saying he is looking forward to them. “Not only have I anticipated there would be some debates, but the campaign has been hard at work to find sponsors for that kind of forum,” he said. Irvin on Tuesday challenged Weisner and the other challenger, Stephanie Kifowit, to a series of four debates before April’s mayoral election. Kifowit also said she is eager to debate.

Aurora’s Fourth Ward is shaping up to be a battleground for one of the city’s hottest election races this spring with two challengers already filing to unseat incumbent Alderman Rick Lawrence.

Chuck Norris, a 32-year-old letter carrier and Marine veteran, was the latest to file for the seat Friday afternoon.

“Walking my mail route I get to talk to people and learn their concerns and hear about their problems,” Norris said. “I’m a real good listener and I’ve got some problem-solving skills, so I think I would be a good fit working to satisfy both the city and my constituents.”

Hal Beebee II and Lawrence both filed their petitions with the Aurora Election Committee on Monday.

In the past, three candidates for any Aurora city hall race would have forced a primary, but changes to the election law now require more than four candidates to trigger a primary.
